Unit 3 Reflection
This unit was probably my favorite so far. Stories of others and memories that we contain are so special in that they affect our own life and the way we live. Everyone has stories and memories and the more stories we know, the better we can live, the more aware we are. It is important to analyze why things are the way they are and try to put stories with art. It makes art that much more interesting when you can guess the story behind it or when the artist explains the purpose of the art his/herself. As Bang(2000) says"It is these 'emotions attached to remembered experiences' that seem largely to determine our present responses" (p. 73). Bang hits the nail on the head because my emotions are really what drove me to create the pieces of art in this unit. I enjoyed Faith Ringgold's lesson the most because I was able to display one moment in my memory in a painting using different media. I got to illustrate a special memory and it made me that much more excited to finish the piece. Although the story may be different to an outsider or someone who doesn't know me, I know exactly what this art represents and the story/memory behind it is even more precious. As Pink(2005) says "Stories capture the context, capture the emotions.... Stories are important cognitive events, for the encapsulate, into compact package, information, knowledge, context and emotion" (p. 103). I enjoyed the other two lessons but they were just not as close to my heart as Faith Ringgold's lesson. I would love to incorporate Faith Ringgold's quilt making into my classroom lessons. I remember making a piece of a quilt for my elementary school PTA when I was younger and it would be neat for all the students in my classroom to create a design or draw a memory onto paper that could then be transferred onto a quilt to be displayed in the school somewhere, especially for 5th graders. It would be neat to leave a piece of your heart or a memory at your elementary school forever.
